Training architects who design society in its entirety

The Department of Architecture at Kyoto Seika University trains "architects" to design all kinds of spaces and cities that people interact with. An architect is not simply "a person who designs buildings. It is a person who has the ability and attitude to make creative proposals for better environments and situations, starting with cities, architecture, and space, and extending to people's daily lives. The Department of Architecture has a new curriculum for the 2025 academic year, with two majors that students can choose from after admission. In addition to qualifying for the architectural profession, students will be able to study furniture and interior design, urban and environmental design, sustainable building and community development, and a wider range of career options. In today's world where people's lifestyles are diversifying, what is required of architects is not only appearance and rationality, but also imagination for the people who live and use the space, a deep understanding of the history and culture of the land and region, and the ability to propose new society and lifestyles based on this understanding. Architecture is a discipline of hope that will shape the society of the future for decades to come.

Features of the Department

First year students learn the basics of design, and second year students begin to specialize.

In the first year, students acquire basic knowledge and skills in design and think about the environment and places where people live. Students then choose their major in the second year according to their interests, whether they wish to deepen their architectural design skills or their understanding of human society and the natural environment, and whether they wish to think about the nature of communities.

Develop an international mindset that works around the world

With a view to being active on the global stage, we offer many opportunities for long-term overseas fieldwork and critiques by world-renowned architects from abroad. We also offer workshops with partner universities overseas. Students acquire the ability to present and discuss their designs in English.

Small-group instruction by professional faculty

Students are divided into studios (seminars) with faculty members who are professional architects and community experts, and deepen their expertise under small-group instruction. With practical instruction that assumes actual work, students can work on housing, interior design, public architecture, urban design, environmental design, and more, depending on their interests. Students can also obtain qualifications to take the first-class architect and second-class architect examinations.
