Capturing the Imagination in Ways Only Visual Expression Can

In the Course in Video & Media Arts, students work on creating artistic video works that are capable of touching the hearts of viewers. The curriculum is organized around the three subfields: art animation, short film, and media art. Students can work in a variety of formats that include music videos, commercials, video installations, and works using projection mapping. There are also classes that bring in leading video artists, and students can broaden the scope of their work through exposure to the latest techniques and methods of expression. In addition, we hold screenings that are planned and managed by students with an emphasis on both creation and communication. with the expectations that our students will grow as artists by presenting their work and receiving constructive feedback.     [Advanced Studio Art / Year 3]
    In this class, leading animators, filmmakers, and contemporary artists active in Japan and abroad are invited as guest lecturers to give workshops. By hearing stories from working professionals, Students gain an understanding of the video and media industries and envision a career after graduation, which is designed to raise their motivation. In addition, by coming into contact with artists who are reshaping the field, students learn about the possibilities of visual expression and gain insights into how to transform and enhance their own work. This class is designed to help students equip students with a flexible mindset as they prepare for their graduation project. Building upon the knowledge and techniques gained in their second year of study, students add the skills they need for the culminating work of their undergraduate experience.

What you will study

  1. 1STYEAR

    Laying a solid artistic and creative foundation

    Students take common courses in the Faculty of Fine Arts to develop their foundations as artists and creators, including the ability to observe, think, and imagine. They also learn the basics across all seven courses and start to explore which fields they would like to pursue.

  2. 2NDYEAR

    Learning the basics of video production

    Students learn to use software such as 3ds Max for 3DCG, CLIP STUDIOPAINT for 2D animation, and Adobe Premiere Pro and AfterEffects for video editing.

  3. 3RDYEAR

    Producing individual and group works

    Students gain experience completing a work in its entirety, doing everything from shooting to editing on their own. Students also work in groups to produce works for advancement to the next level, which are presented at screenings and other events and are also distributed outside the university.

  4. 4THYEAR

    Pursuing a unique expression of your own

    Students engage in their graduation work, making full use of the skills and expressive vocabulary they have developed over the past four years of study. They strive for originality and their own unique creative expression when completing the final work of their undergraduate career.

  • A multi-purpose studio space can be converted into a darkroom and is equipped for puppet animation and hand-drawn animation.
